You are very good at Economics and even you did the best scores back in high school in Chemistry.
But when exams or degrees are over, you realize that you haven’t read anything other than a textbook in months and are confused about who the prime minister is. But then you again take a moment one day and realize you don’t know too much at all other than your discipline. What you lack here is called, General Knowledge or GK. It is very essential nowadays to have a solid grip over general affairs. In this article, we will help you know the smart way of enhancing your general knowledge. GK might not help you in your academics. But will surely help you score your entrance tests, and get the government job that you have been dreaming about.
Therefore we will provide you with some easy ways for enhancing your general knowledge. However, let’s first define it:
General Knowledge:
General knowledge is understanding a variety of topics rather than in-depth knowledge of a single subject. Correctly so. Because even if you are an expert in a certain field, you may not understand the things that are around you, their value to your life, or their importance.
Despite coming through the senses, knowledge is not just a list of unprocessed sensory information. Normal individuals are not tape or video recorders; instead, they appear to process and reprocess information, applying it and generating knowledge with structure from it. (Rumelhart, & Ortony, 2017)
Enhance your general knowledge through these tips:
One of the most important skills is basic general knowledge, which can help you not only pass the test but also manage your profession, employment, society, and daily life. What you need to do to improve your basic general knowledge is as follows.
1. Read the newspaper:
The younger generations in particular find reading the newspaper to be incredibly uninteresting or a waste of time. But, believe it or not, if you make it a practice to read a newspaper every day, even if it only contains articles about a single subject you are interested in, over time it will connect you with a great amount of knowledge.
2. Watch television:
Watching television is the easiest and most fun option. Undoubtedly, many of you spend a lot of time watching your favorite TV shows, dramas, or films. Why not give some time to the 24-hour news channels? The morning bulletins can help you save a huge amount of time. Consider taking in an educational program or documentary. You’ve probably heard of Planet Earth or Man vs. Wild.
3. Apps and websites:
The digital age has made life much simpler than it was in the past. On the internet, you can find nearly anything. But use it carefully because not all content online is authentic. Many websites either don’t update their base of knowledge or give inaccurate information. Secondly, a lot of websites are just forums where users can express their viewpoints and thoughts without offering a valid source or link. Therefore, you must discover trustworthy and reliable sources online.
4. Books on general knowledge:
You’ve probably heard that a book is a person’s best friend. Simply read books and magazines in an old-fashioned manner if you’re sick of hurting your eyes by staring at the screen of your laptop or smartphone. Many encyclopedias and general knowledge books may be found online and at shops such as Encyclopedia and Britannica.
You may greatly improve your understanding of a certain subject by reading competing editions of books and publications like Down to Earth, The Economist, Very Short Introductions, Science Reporter, and Manorama Yearbook.
5. Articles and blogs:
You may also subscribe to your favorite blogger to learn more about the topics that interest you. You may expand your ideas by reading a blog. Additionally, you are allowed to see a certain issue from other angles. For instance, if you’re an environmentalist, you may follow blogs like BBC: Earth blog, Tree hugger, Grist, EcoWatch, and Inside Climate News.
Or if you are an MBA student, you can simply read articles that give ideas on mba thesis topics to enhance your knowledge for the future when you are working on your thesis and thinking about topic ideas.
6. Visiting places:
The world’s best teacher is experienced, not any book. Experiences are not things you forget quickly. If you love animals, you may visit a museum to learn about their history or a wildlife reserve to experience nature personally. If it doesn’t break the bank, you could be interested in traveling to a place or country to learn more about it. Additionally, when visiting a certain location, engage with the locals to learn about the history, culture, artifacts, tales, and folklore of the area.
7. Start writing:
Sound a little irrelevant, right? Writing is an art and this art connects you to other interesting topics. Now, you might be wondering, how? Suppose you are a writer and you are provided a topic to write on. The topic is very new to you and you know nothing about it. You will be researching that topic and finding out many interesting facts. Not even that, you may save so much of the knowledge in your mind involuntarily that will be used in the future. You will find yourself motivated to look for synonyms and meanings to new vocabularies.
Everything that enters your head must be put in writing. You can always get more specific later. When you’re brainstorming and trying to think of a topic, use mind mapping. (usessaywriter, 2022)
You can find new vocabulary through reading too but it won’t be as motivated to learn and enhance your vocabulary list as it will be while you will be writing. Since you will have to put meaning to it for the readers. You will be more careful and as simple as possible.
Conclusion:
You’ll be able to understand things better if you have a solid grounding. It will increase your awareness and intelligence. Your ability to think broadly and grasp many points of view will be enhanced by academic knowledge that is sufficiently informed about the world and its events. In the process, your critical thinking abilities may also improve. What are you waiting for, then? Only from today on, work on it. Choose your favorite subject areas and immerse yourself in the wide scope of general knowledge.
